This movie has it all! Action, laughs, and some drama. It really felt like a new classic movie that everyone should see and there should be at least 3 in a series of movies. Guardians of the Galaxy will have you cheering the heroes, being surprised at new kinds of aliens, and quoting some hilarious lines.
Starting in 1988, you see a young boy named Peter listening to his cassette player while waiting in a hospital. Yes, it does start out very serious. His mother is dies while saying goodbye to him. The boy runs out of the hospital into the foggy night only to be beamed up by an alien ship. Fast forward 20 some years to Chris Pratt as the grown boy still listening to the cassette, but now dancing across an abandoned planet as a scavenger. He is in pursuit of an orb without knowing what it is, except that his partner Yondu (Michael Rooker) agreed to sell it with a buyer. Of course, others want the orb too. But none more than our villain Ronan (Lee Pace) who knows what it is and wants it in order to destroy a planet.
Like all respectable villains, Ronan doesn’t do his own work. He sends his adopted sister Gamora (Zoe Saldana) to get the orb from Peter who has ditched Yondu to keep the money for himself. When the buyer backs out after hearing Ronan’s name, Peter and Gamora fight over the orb. Yondu is not about to be ditched on a sale. His bounty on Peter gets Rocket (the gun toting raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Groot (the walking tree voiced by Vin Diesel) involved too. All four characters fight it out until they are arrested.
After Gamora explains that she is trying to stop Ronan’s evil plans, the four decide to band together. Well, sort of, there is the huge amount of money that she promises them. But first they need to get out of jail. The jail introduces us to Drax (a highly tattooed alien played by Dave Bautista) who wants revenge on anyone associated with Ronan. His species is takes everything highly literally causing several of the movies laughs.
There is a wild prison break. The gang gets to the buyer for the orb, the creepy Collector (Benicio Del Toro), but things ho wrong. The orb ends up with Ronan. Billions of lives are at stake. And there is the big ending. Ok, I made all that sound typical but it really isn’t. There are so many laughs, so many unique aliens, and fun action that I don’t want to give it away.
Go see the movie. You will have a great time!
Oh, as usual for Marvel, there is something at the end of the credits. I didn’t wait for it, but after looking up what it was…it sounds odd. Stay thru the credits if you didn’t drink too much during the movie.
